I don’t know about you, but I go through phases where I fall a lot and phases where I hardly fall. I am tired of falling and I am tired of the term falling so these tumbles will henceforth be known as gravitational errors. That way, I can blame the earth for my trips rather than my wonky leg and terrible balance!
Sometimes these gravitational errors can be funny and you can have a good giggle about them, but other times they are downright painful! We will start with a funny fall to lighten the mood.
I was heading to the shower. I shower in the en suite as there is simply a step into this rather than finding a way to clamber into the bath in the main bathroom. I made my way around our bed and was just reaching for the door when I realised that I hadn’t brought a towel with me. So I embark on the journey back to the main bathroom to pick one up.
My cat Cleo is a proper pest and is determined that she wants in our wardrobe so Super Sarah and I often have to leave clean washing in front of the wardrobe until she isn’t around so that we can sneak inside and put the washing away. As I was working my way around the bed to the shower, for no reason whatsoever, I tumble to the floor. I miss all sharp corners, land squarely on the floor with my head resting comfortably on a basketball. Then a mountain of washing lands on top of me.
Super Sarah comes through to investigate to find a pile of washing with my head and feet sticking out of it! After a good few minutes of laughing (I was laughing too!), she extracts me from the pile and I can get on with my day!
Now for a painful gravitational error. I was making a cup of tea for Super Sarah and I and I was opening a new box of tea bags, when I simply started heading towards the ground. On this occasion, I hit everything on my way down. Firstly, I hit my throat on the kitchen worktop, then I bounced my ribs off the corner of the wooden stool that we have in the kitchen, then scraped my arm down this same area. I landed on the ground a wheezing, stunned mess.
Super Sarah came running to haul me to my feet again and tend to my wounds. She really is amazing! Luckily I didn’t break any bones and for this, I thank the Vitamin D and calcium that I take daily giving me good strong bones!
Those bruises are taking their time to go away but they will fade. I have always hated the feeling of falling and now I have a condition that causes me to fall left, right and centre. Oh and anywhere in between! Nonetheless, I relish my independence and even though I have had a bad few weeks for falling, I know the next few weeks will be fine.
My final clumsy greeting with the ground had me in what could be a potentially embarrassing situation but instead of panicking and causing more of a scene, I instead rolled about the floor laughing in Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh.
Here is what happened…I am meeting with the future mother-in-law and Super Sarah for coffee when I decide to go to the loo. I stand, I stretch then I start to move. Then, completely unexpected, I start to slowly tip backwards. Super Sarah, my hero, reaches for me and though she is not able to stop me from falling, she does manage to gently lay me down on the floor. As if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, I pull down an entire stretch of Starbucks signs!
Family and the kind souls nearby rush to my aid and there I am rolling about laughing on the ground in the middle of a shopping centre!
What have I learned from all of my recent toppling? Sometimes it hurts and it is acceptable to cry, but on some occasions it is necessary to have tears of laughter! It would be so much easier if I could defy gravity!
